2025 Audi A4 goes electric with 400-mile range and 510bhp S4
The new nickel-manganese-cobalt battery comprises 15 individual prismatic cells, arranged to maximise space usage within the floorpan and boost interior space while optimising energy density. Equally instrumental in optimising the PPE architectures endurance credentials is a new approach to electronic management.
Silicon-carbide semiconductors are used throughout the wiring structure of PPE-based cars, chosen for their lower heat emissions and thus reduced energy wastage. In addition, the new electric motors have square-section stator wiring, which eliminates the microscopic wasted spaces between each winding on conventional round wires.
Hot versions
The electric A4 is expected to be launched with a familiar spread of variants, ranging from an entry-level, rear-driven A4 45 E-tron to a four-wheel-drive twin-motor A4 55 E-tron that should match the equivalent Q6 with 396bhp and a sub-6.0sec 0-62mph time.
Above that, a hot S4 E-tron is tipped to ramp total output to 510bhp in its most potent setting substantially more power than even todays V6-engined RS4 Competition makes to cut the 0-62mph sprint time to nearer 4.0sec.
In addition, Volkswagen Group boss Oliver Blumes plan to put more focus on the RS brand over the coming years means a hardcore RS4 E-tron is unlikely to be far behind.
Recently departed Audi Sport boss Sebastian Grams told Autocar that RS-badged EVs will have their own special character. This will come courtesy of outlandish design cues that mark them out clearly from the standard cars on which they are based, distinctive acceleration soundtracks and bespoke powertrain set-ups that exploit the lofty reserves of these hot range-toppers.
Inside, the A4 will take its lead from the Q6 E-tron SUV, with a human-centric arrangement based around a trio of high-definition screens, including a stand-alone touchscreen in front of the passenger, which lets them input routes and select music, for example.
It is likely to be offered with the same augmented reality head-up display as the Q6 and a cross-cabin LED lighting system that greets occupants and shows the state of charge when the car is plugged in.

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
Key Takeaways
- Audi is joining the electric car revolution with the introduction of the A6 e-Tron, a mid-size electric sedan that promises to be worth the wait.
- The A6 e-Tron concept showcases Audi's commitment to developing electric models and winning back customers lost to other brands.
- The A6 e-Tron will feature a sleek design, with Matrix-LED headlights, a flowing profile, and a spacious interior with Audi's Virtual Cockpit and optional additional screens. It will be built on Audi's PPP platform and offer a range of up to 400 miles on a single charge.
Audi is the last premium German automaker to unveil a mid-size electric sedan, and we'll have to see if it came too late to the party or arrived just in time to steal the cake. Mercedes EQE and BMW i5 are already available, and the four-rings brand is yet to come. But the carmaker's promise is that it will be worth waiting for. After all, it put a lot of money into developing electric models with its brothers and cousins from Volkswagen and Porsche. So, after the 2019 Q8 e-Tron and the e-Tron GT (a badge-engineered Porsche Taycan), it is time for a mid-size electric sedan.
When researching this article, we used prices and references from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz models.
Electric Car Revolution On The Four-Rings Brand
BMW introduced the 5 Series this year, and besides the gasoline and diesel-powered versions, it also offers an electric drivetrain under the i5 badge. On the other hand, Mercedes-Benz chose a different path and made the EQE on a different platform than the rest of the E-Class range. Audi seems to follow BMW's recipe and will come with an electron-powered version for the A6. That's what the carmaker's officials said in 2021 when they unveiled the A6 e-Tron concept at the Shanghai auto show. Furthermore, they said the car looks 95% similar to the production version. Still, the sloped-down silhouette is intriguing since that shape is nowadays specific for the A7. So, the big question is whether the A6 will continue its journey as a sedan or morph into a liftback. Either way, the A6 e-Tron concept is a giant leap forward for Audi since it shows what the carmaker is ready to do in order to win back customers lost to other brands.
There won't be any surprises on the car's front fascia, where the headlights will be with the Matrix-LED solution. They will flank the singleframe grille, even if the term "grille" is somewhat an overstatement. There will be some small openings in that panel to cool the batteries and the electronics hidden behind it, but most of it will be blocked since electric cars don't need a wide cooling area. From its profile, the flowing lines and sharp angles create a dynamic image for the vehicle, with a raked windshield that lowers the drag resistance.

Inside, customers will see an Audi Virtual Cockpit for the instrument cluster and a secondary touchscreen placed atop the center stack. Audi might dare to add another screen, as an option, on the passenger side. Whether the A6 will be a hatchback or a classic sedan, it will feature flat-folding rear seats that expand the trunk space. Moreover, in 2022 Audi introduced the A6 Avant e-Tron concept, so families will have their electric version as well.
What We Know So Far About The A6 e-Tron Powertrain
Audi developed the PPP platform for electric vehicles and will build the A6 e-Tron on it. The automaker already showed many technical details about it on the upcoming Q6 e-Tron. Depending on the options and versions, it will have a 100 kWh battery pack, although smaller-sized versions may be considered. While the all-wheel-drive system will be available on specific versions, the base model will propel only the rear wheels. The dual motor system will provide up to 476 HP for exhilarating performance. At the same time, the base model fitted with the large battery pack will target a 400 miles range.
