EV Charging at Home Installation Setup and Safety Tips
Charging your electric car at home: Everything you need to know
Can you charge an electric car at home?
Yes, you can charge an electric car at home using either a standard wall socket or a dedicated AC fast charger (often referred to generically as a wallbox charger, although Wallbox is an actual brand of charger).
Petrol stations - those monuments to expensive fuel, overpriced junk food and restrooms that hygiene forgot - arent exactly at the top of anyones must visit list when they leave the house (although they are handy for checking tyre pressures).
Which is part of the appeal of electric vehicles (EVs): to get them all charged up and ready to silently roll, you dont have to leave the house. Ever.
Charging your EV is as simple as charging your phone.
How to charge an electric car: domestic socket
Both EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) need to be plugged in to an external power source to charge their onboard battery packs, and its as simple and straightforward as plugging in your mobile phone when it needs a charge.
A cable, which is typically supplied when you buy an EV, but is also available from a number of specialist retailers, can be plugged in to a standard 240-volt, AC (alternating current) domestic wall socket, giving you the freedom to charge wherever you can find one (which is: almost everywhere).
Download the EVGuide Report, 2022
Australia's one-stop snapshot of all things relating to electric cars.
Download for freeThis is also known as Level 1 AC trickle charging, and what youre getting power-wise is around 2.0kW of power through a normal 10-amp socket.
Its the slowest method of charging your EV, and it can take anywhere from four to 48 hours to fully charge a battery from empty, depending on how big your EVs battery capacity is (as a rule of thumb, divide the kWh of your battery by two, and that should give you a decent indicator of many hours itll take to charge).
The kW offered while charging is equivalent to the kilometres youll get from every 10 minutes of charging, so 2.0kW will give you around 2km of range for every 10 minutes you charge.

Cost
Electricity retailers in Australia chargebetween 20 and 35 cents per kWh.
The MG ZS EV, Australias cheapest electric vehicle at $44,990, plus on-road costs, has a 44.5kWh battery. If your electricity rate was 20 cents per kWh, that means it would cost a grand total of $8.90 to fully charge the battery - significantly less than the average cost of filling a tank with petrol.
If your electricity at home is harnessed via renewable solar energy, congratulations: the cost to charge your EV is a delightful zero (as long as you charge it during the day, when it's sunny).
The MG ZS EV, Australias cheapest electric vehicle at $44,990, has a 44.5kWh battery.
How to charge an electric car: AC fast charger
Electric car charging at home in Australia can also be done via a dedicated fast charger.
Often referred to as Level 2 AC fast charging, this is - you guessed it - a lot faster than AC trickle charging.
AC fast chargers up the power output to 7.2kW for standard 240-volt single-phase wiring, and 22kW if you have 415-volt three-phase power at your disposal.
A 7.2kW charger will give you 7.2km of range every 10 minutes, whereas the 22kW charger will give you 22km of range every 10 minutes.
Again, the time it takes to charge your EV battery from empty to full entirely depends on the size of the cars battery capacity (again, divide the battery capacity by the charging power to work it out).
Before you decide which AC fast charger to get, be aware that some EVs - namely PHEVS - will only charge at a maximum rate of 3.6kW or 7.6kW, so getting a 22kW charger is a bit pointless if you own a car that cant utilise that kind of power.

Cost
A Level 2 7.2kW charger costs around $950 to $1500 plus installation, although many car companies include free installation when you purchase an EV.
A Level 2 22kW charger is a little dearer, and costs around $1000 to $3000, plus installation.

Home & Commercial EV Charger installations
Choosing the Right EV Charging Equipment
A licensed and certified electrician will need to install your new EV charger. EVSE Australia does have a network of trusted installers, but conversely, you may opt to use your own electrician. Before they come for a site assessment and installation, determine where you intend to park your EV while its charging. Ideally, you want the charging station to be no more than 3m from the connection port on your car. In terms of charging a vehicle in the future, we are seeing newer generation EVs coming out with faster onboard capacity utilizing the more powerful 3 phase connections. If the building has access to 3 phase power then we would highly recommend that this is made available to your home with an outlet in your garage. If not, then choose a single-phase connection with a capacity of 32Amp to give you a power available of 7.4kW. Your installer will determine what your home has and if any updates are needed.
Our EV chargers come with configurable outputs so they will work on both single and 3-phase connections.
Please place the outlet close to the garage door or area where you intend to charge the car to give you flexibility so that the cable can charge the car when its parked inside or outside and remember to give space for the charger to be mounted on the wall.
Electric vehicle charging Charger installation
Installing an EV charger at home
Having an EV charger at home is the most convenient and least costly way to charge. Thats why over 80% of EV owners charge at home. Like charging your cell phone overnight, you can plug in your vehicle, then set it and forget it until the morning. Youll head out with a fully charged vehicle and peace of mind.
The cost of installing an EV charger will depend on factors that may depend on where you reside:
- cost of charging unit
- electrical capacity of your home
- electrical permit requirements
- cost of labour
If youre already an EV owner or just starting to think of making the investment, youll want to become familiar with the chargers available. Before you decide which, one is right, ask yourself these questions:
- Is my parking space in a garage or is it outdoors? If your parking space is outdoors, an outdoor rating for your charger is important.
- How much do I drive? This question can help you establish whether you need a Level1 or Level2 charger in your home. If you drive frequently, a Level2 charger might be preferable. The average Canadian drives approximately 20,000 kilometres per year, or about 55 kilometres per day.
- Is the charger safety certified? Its worth repeating, chargers without safety certification can lead to injury or property damage.
- Do I want a portable or wall-mounted charger? Some chargers can be plugged directly into a standard wall outlet, while others need a 240 V outlet. The latter must be installed by a certified electrician, which might cost more initially but will result in faster charging times.
- How can a smart charger benefit me? Some chargers come with Wi-Fi technology that allow you to monitor and program your power use remotely. Take advantage of this feature to program your charging during off-peak periods to save on electrical costs.
DC fast chargers are not suitable for home installation. They are most often found at dedicated charging stations, public spaces, along highways, or at tourist destinations.
Hiring a licensed electrician
A Level2 EV charger is a high-voltage appliance with similar electrical requirements to an electric stove or dryer (240 volts), and in most jurisdictions, must be installed by a licensed electrician who can also help you:
- choose a charger
- determine the electrical capacity of your home
- submit electrical permits on your behalf
I live in a multi-unit residential building (MURB)
MURB tenants face unique challenges associated with the installation of EV charging stations as there are more decision makers in the process. Tenants, building owners, strata councils, and property managers all play a role in the consideration and implementation of a charger installation.
The Guide to Electric Vehicle Charging in Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (PDF, 3.6 MB) outlines a comprehensive approach to the planning and installation of EV charging infrastructure in new and existing multi-unit residential buildings. It does not include recommended EV charging solutions as these decisions should be made in consultation with an expert.
EV chargers and your business
For business owners, the great thing about EV chargers is that they can be installed just about anywherefrom malls and parking lots to libraries and underground garages. An EV charger can also be a great way to:
- attract customers and help support employees who work at your facilities
- allow customers and clients to shop or browse while they charge their cars
- help show a corporate commitment to sustainability and green living
By choosing an ENERGY STAR certified EV charger for your business, you can save energy while providing clients with a green benefit.
Getting started
If you dont have authority over your building, youll need to obtain permission to proceed with an installation.
Whether you are leasing space or own your own building, consulting a licensed electrician will help you through the next steps, including:
- selecting a location for the charger(s)
- submitting permits
- checking your electrical infrastructure and making upgrades, as necessary
- assisting with rebate applications
- installing the charger(s)
Incentives for installing EV chargers
Single-family homes
Rebates of up to 50% of the installation cost per home charger are currently available in some provinces. Check with your provincial energy providers to determine how you can save on an EV charger installation.
Multi-unit residential buildings and workplaces
Incentives for the installation of EV charging stations in MURBs and workplaces are available through federal and provincial programs.
Federal
The Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) provides funding for the installation of EV chargers in MURBs and workplaces.
Provincial
Please consult your provincial energy provider for EV charger incentives and rebates. A licensed electrician may also point you towards available incentives and may assist you with the application process.
Note: Some rebates require pre-approval of the work before it can begin. Please check the requirements of any rebates or incentives to determine whether pre-approval is needed.

What types of EV charger installation companies are there?
There are 3 main types of companies that we have categorized in our shortlist to install an EV charger:
- EV charger manufacturersThese are the companies that design and produce EV charging stations. Many of these manufacturers not only sell their products but also provide installation services. Opting for installation from the manufacturer will offer more streamlined customer support and usually a much better warranty. Examples from our best EV charger installer list include Andersen, ivie, INDRA and Pod Point.
- Energy SuppliersSome traditional energy suppliers have diversified into EV charging. These companies offer integrated energy solutions, such as providing renewable energy for EV charging or special energy tariffs for EV owners. By choosing an energy company, customers can potentially bundle their home energy and EV charging costs, leading to potential savings. Examples from our best EV charger installer list include Octopus, British Gas, e.on next and OVO energy.
- Independent installation companiesThese are companies that focus solely on the installation of EV chargers. They might not manufacture the chargers themselves but are experts in assessing the best charging solutions for different locations and customer needs. Their primary advantage is their flexibility in offering a variety of charger brands and types. They can also often provide tailored solutions for homes or businesses and might be a good fit for those looking for more customized installations. Examples from our best EV charger installer list include Smart Home Charge, Mr Charger and Go Zero.
The best installation choice for your own set-up will depend on your specific needs. If you are after an integrated energy solution where your EV charging is combined with your home energy tariff, an energy company might be the best bet. On the other hand, if you already have a preferred EV charger brand and just need a reliable installation, then it would be more cost-effective to opt for the manufacturer or an independent installer.
Be sure to consider post-installation service too. Some installers offer regular maintenance and checks, while others provide remote monitoring services.

Should I install a tethered or untethered EV charger?
Tethered chargers offer more convenience, while untethered chargers offer more flexibility, so your choice depends on what you value more convenience or flexibility.Lets fully compare the differences between installing a tethered and an untethered charging cable.
What is a Tethered EV charging cable?
- A tethered charger is installed permanently attached to the wall box and cannot be removed
- This makes it more convenient, less likely to get stolen, and quicker to use
- However, when you change your car you may need to change your charging unit
Advantages of a tethered EV charging cable
- Convenience: The biggest advantage of tethered chargers is convenience. The cable is always there and ready to use; you just need to plug it into your car, without having to unpack and repack a cable each time you charge.
- You wont lose it: Since the cable stays attached to the unit, there is a lower risk of it getting lost.
Disadvantages of a tethered EV charging cable
- Inflexibility: Tethered chargers are less flexible in terms of compatibility, as the cable comes with a specific type of plug that may not fit all EV models. If you change your vehicle to a model with a different port, you might need a new charger.
- Storage: The cable may be exposed to the elements if not properly stored with a cable tie or hook, which can potentially degrade its lifespan.
What is an untethered EV charging cable?
- An untethered charger still needs a cable (unfortunately untethered is not a wireless charger)
- The cable is plugged in and out of the charger as you use it, this takes longer to use each time and you might also need to buy the cable if it is not included as standard with your vehicle
- You can use your cable if charging at another location
- You can increase the length of the cable at any time (so if you decide to start charging the car further from your home charge point its easy to purchase a longer cable)
- If you change your car you can change the cable, not the entire wall box unit!
Advantages of untethered EV chargers
- Flexibility: The main advantage of untethered chargers is their flexibility. You can use different cables with different types of plugs to accommodate various EV models. This could be useful if you have more than one EV with different connectors or if you plan to change your car in the future.
- Safety: Since the cable can be removed and stored separately, it may be safer from theft or damage from the elements.
Disadvantages of untethered EV chargers
- Inconvenience: Every time you want to charge your car, you have to connect the cable to the charging unit and then to your car. After charging, you need to disconnect it and put it in a safe place.
- Potential Extra Cost: You may need to buy a separate cable if its lost or damaged.
Can I just install my own EV charger at home?
If you are highly skilled as a do-it-yourself genius then you may be asking the question can I install my own EV charger? It is certainly possible for you to install an EV charging point yourself, however, unless you are a qualified electrician you will not be able to self-certify the work and you will need to notify building control to have the work inspected. Given that the currents used to charge a car are extremely high it is not without its risks, the recommended guidance is not to attempt this. You should instead search for an experienced and certified EV charger installer. An experienced installer will have achieved the qualifications required to install your charging unit to the correct standard that complies with UK electrical standards. The retailer of your EV charging unit should be able to recommend a company to install your unit.
Once the installation is complete the installer should provide you with an electrical charger installation certificate and apply for any OZEV grants that you may be eligible for on your behalf.
There have been a series of changes to the OZEV grant scheme in 2022. The significant change from March 2022 is that the OZEV grant is no longer available to single unit properties or homeowners. Caution with Buy Now, Pay Later Options for EV Chargers
Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) options have surged in popularity across various industries, offering consumers the appeal of immediate access to products or services without the upfront financial commitment. While this financing method can provide convenient solutions for some, its vital to approach it with caution when considering an expensive purchase such as an EV charger.
Understanding the true cost of an EV charger on credit BNPL options are enticing because they allow EV owners the benefits of an EV charger without an immediate financial cost. However, its crucial to understand the entire cost structure. Some BNPL plans may come with interest rates that, over time, significantly increase the total amount paid. Others may have hidden fees or penalties for missed payments.
EV chargers are not short-term purchases. They are intended to last several years. Opting for a BNPL option means youre financially tied to the product for the duration of the payment plan. Ensure that the products lifespan and warranty align with the payment period to avoid paying for something that might malfunction or become obsolete.
Consider all the financial implications and alternatives If payments are missed or delayed, it can negatively affect your credit ratings. Sometimes, traditional financing methods, like bank loans or credit card payments, might offer better interest rates or more flexible terms than BNPL options. Its advisable to compare the total costs associated with various payment methods before deciding.
