13 Upcoming Electric Sedans in the U.S. market [Update]
Update: 2024 BMW i5 (BMW 5 Series Electric), 2024 Cadillac Celestiq, 2026 Chrysler 300 Electric successor, and 2024 VW ID.7, updated.
As the world increasingly moves to electric powertrains and efficiency starts to play a more significant role in purchase decisions, sedans are set to regain some of the popularity they have lost over the last decade. Here are 13 upcoming electric sedans arriving in the U.S. by the mid-decade:
2026 Audi E4 (Audi A4 Electric)
An Audi A4 Electric or an Audi E4 is expected to join the four-ringed brands line-up by 2025. It would be one of the VW Groups midsize electric sedans that offers global customers an alternative to the Tesla Model 3, Mercedes C-Class Electric, Nio ET5, etc. Little is known about this model so far, but there are rumors in the media that it would borrow the PPE platform from the Audi E6 and could come in S and RS flavors.
2024 Audi E6 (Audi A6 Electric)
Audis mega-launch in 2024 would be a Tesla Model S rival called Audi E6 that could prove to be a big hit in the U.S. and China. Based on the PPE platform, it would feature a sleek and high-tech design very similar to the Audi A6 e-tron concept from Auto Shanghai 2021. Expect a 100 kWh battery pack that provides an EPA-est. range of up to approximately 350 miles. Audi has hinted that it will offer an RS variant that accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in less than four seconds. An Audi A6 e-tron Avant (Audi E6 Avant) is also in the pipeline but may not make it to the U.S.
2025 BMW 3 Series Electric
BMW fans would already know that a BMW 3 Series Electric (BMW i3 sedan) already exists, but thats a China-only model. Global markets, including the U.S., will receive a different BMW 3 Series electric in 2025. Unlike the Chinese spec, the global BMW 3 Series electric will be a Neue Klasse platform model designed from the ground up to be an EV with advanced capabilities.
2024 BMW i5 (BMW 5 Series Electric)
A BMW i5 is coming as part of the eighth-gen BMW 5 Series. Munichs long-awaited Tesla Model S nemesis will come in 335 hp eDrive40 single-motor RWD variant and a 590 hp M60 dual-motor AWD variant, as per a report Autocar published on April 25, 2023.
The Autocar report says an 81 kWh battery pack, chargeable at up to 200 kW, will deliver a WLTP range of up to 321 miles. That seems pretty low in our opinion and the EPA-est. the range could be even lower, around 260 miles. On the plus side, the British publications first drive review suggests itll have great dynamics and will be quite fun to drive.
The BMW i5 will compete with the Tesla Model S, Mercedes EQE, Audi E6, and Nio ET7. The new electric sedan will debut on May 24, 2023, and have its global market launch in October 2023. Additionally, a BMW i5 Touring (Estate) is also planned, and it will compete with the upcoming Nio ET5 Shooting Brake.
2024 Cadillac Celestiq
The Cadillac Celestiq is the brands new symbol of opulence, offering a plethora of cutting-edge technologies, new levels of comfort and convenience, and an advanced emission-free powertrain. The new flagship Cadillac sedan boasts features like SmartGlass Nanotechnology roof, Ultra Cruise, an end-to-end 55-inch HD LED display on the dashboard, four individual seats, and more.
The Celestiq sports a dual-motor powertrain that produces a GM-est. 600 hp and 640 lb.-ft. of torque and gives it an all-wheel drive drivetrain layout. A 0-60 mph sprint takes just 3.8 seconds. A 111 kWh battery pack enables the motors, letting the car cover a distance of 300 miles (GM-est.) on a full charge.
The Celestiq will retail at over USD 300,000! That would be quite a steep price for a full-size luxury sedan, even among electric vehicles. The ultimate Cadillac sedan will be hand-built at the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.
2026 Chrysler 300 Electric successor
The next-gen Chrysler 300 will be an electric sedan, Australian magazineDrivereported based on insider information on July 1, 2022. Development of the Chrysler 300 Electric has started, and the model will be a cousin of a Dodge electric sedan, as per the report.
In March 2023, Stellantis held a dealer meeting in Las Vegas, where it unveiled future products, some in metal, and some digitally. According to a report MoparInsiders.com released on April 23, 2023, the company teased a Chrysler electric sedan at the event. This car looked similar to the model we saw at the Stellantis EV Day 2021, pictured above.
Production of the seventh-gen Dodge Charger and the second-gen Chrysler 300 will take place at Brampton (Ont.) Assembly Plant in Canada. Stellantis plans to end the production of these L-series models when it begins retooling the factory in 2024. Rumor has it that the Chrysler electric sedan will follow in 2026.
The Australian publication claims that the Chrysler 300 and Dodge electric sedans will have a system voltage of 800 volts. They will be based on the STLA Large platform as they are full-size models and demand the highest levels of performance parameters Stellantis can offer. Plus, the company has confirmed the retooling of the Brampton (Ont.) Assembly Plant will make it compatible with the STLA Large platform in 2025.
Speaking toAutomotive Newsin January 2022, Chrysler CEO Christine Feuell indicated that the successor to the Chrysler 300 would be a vast departure. Expected with a new type of silhouette, performance could be at a whole new level, as the STLA Large could allow fitting 330 kW motors at the front and rear axle. While the gas-powered 300 can do 0-60 mph in less than six seconds, the 300 Electric could accomplish the same in half that time.
Dodge electric sedan
The Dodge electric sedan is expected to hit dealers mid-decade. It should ride on the STLA Large platform and thus have a battery pack with 101-118 kWh energy storage capacity. There are rumors of Dodge readying a tri-motor AWD powertrain, with two motors powering the rear wheels and one motor spinning the front wheels, for its future electric muscle car.
It could get the concepts 800-volt Banshee propulsion system, eRupt multi-speed transmission with electro-mechanical shifting, PowerShot horsepower boost function, and Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust (faux exhaust system) as well. The interior could be high-tech, packing a 16-inch curved, fully digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-by-3-inch HUD, panoramic sunroof, and more.
Stellantis will end the production of the gas-powered Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger at the Brampton (Ontario) Assembly Plant in 2024. 2025 will be the year the first Dodge Electric Muscle Car rolls off the assembly line, and that will likely be a two-door coupe. The Dodge electric sedan could follow later that year or in 2026.
2025 Infiniti electric sedan
On February 17, 2022, Nissan confirmed an Infiniti electric sedan is in the pipeline and will arrive in 2025. The company plans to manufacture the electric sedan at its Canton plant in Mississippi, USA. During the announcement by Ashwani Gupta, the Chief Operating Officerof Nissan Motor Corporation, the company released a teaser of the Infiniti electric sedan, showing features like a full-width LED tail lamp, a curvy roofline, a block-lettered brand logo at the rear, and a ducktail spoiler. Could this be the Infiniti 50s Electric equivalent/successor?
2024 Lotus Type 133
The Lotus Type 133 will be an E-segment electric sedan taking on the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Model S Plaid. Based on the Lotus Eletres Electric Premium Architecture, the Type 133 electric sedan could have a high system voltage of 800 volts that allows ultra-fast or rapid charging on direct current. Expect a 0-60 mph sprint to take just around 2.5 seconds in the four-door Lotus electric car.
The Type 133 is scheduled to debut in 2023, but a more precise release date isnt available yet.
2025 Nissan electric sedan
The Nissan electric sedan will be a technical cousin of the Infiniti electric sedan, also built in Canton (Mississippi), USA, and due in 2025. Nissan had teased the exterior of this model during its Ambition 2030 presentation on November 29, 2021, hinting at a low-slung body with a coupe-style roofline, full-width front and rear lights, and a block-lettered Nissan logo at the rear. Similar to the Altima and Maxima, the electric sedan will be designed for the American market.
2025 Polestar 5
The Polestar 5 will be a luxury electric four-door GT that brings the Polestar Precept concept to reality. It will target performance and tech enthusiasts, those on the lookout for something like the Porsche Taycan, Lotus Type 133 and even the Audi e-tron GT.
Polestar will build it on a newly-developed bonded aluminum platform, and it expects this car to deliver a range of more than 600 km (373 miles) on the WLTP cycle. The EPA-est. range could be just over 300 miles. The company has scheduled the start of production at the end of 2024, which means it could conduct the U.S. launch in the first half of 2025.
2024 VW ID.7
The VW ID.7 takes place of the four-door Passat in the U.S. Based on the MEB platform, the midsize electric sedan is the German automakers Hyundai Ioniq 6 rival. Its coming to the U.S. with a 77 kWh battery pack and powertrains generating up to 282 horsepower. Were expecting it to deliver an EPA-est. range of just over 300 miles.
The ID.7 is the first Volkswagen to feature front seats that offer adaptive Climatronic cooling or heating with a drying function. These seats have a massage function as well. Other highlights include a dimmable panoramic sunroof, a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, smart air conditioning (another Volkswagen-first), and AR head-up display.
Volkswagen will manufacture the ID.7 in Emden, Germany, and launch it in the U.S. in 2024. Expect the starting price to be around USD 50,000.
Alfa Romeo large model
Alfa Romeo plans to launch a new large model developed in the U.S. in 2027, CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told media on July 29, 2022 (via Reuters). It is yet to decide whether it will manufacture the model in the U.S., though. The Alfa Romeo large model must fit international markets, American, Chinese, European. It will be an EV, and perhaps a dedicated EV at that, as Alfa Romeo plans a 100% electric portfolio from 2027.
The Italians havent taken a call on whether the new member will be a large sedan (like the Tesla Model S) or a large SUV (like the Tesla Model X), but the latter is less likely, Imparato has suggested. The company will finalize the body style by the end of the year.
Speaking to Auto Express in August 2022, Imparato indicated that the company is more inclined towards the sedan body style. Given that Alfa Romeo will be an EV-only brand from 2027, aerodynamics will be a challenge, plus knowing that the DNA of Alfa Romeo is sedan, and knowing that the signature of Alfa is sport, the answer is probably not SUV, the CEO said. He suggested the body style could be something between an SUV and a sedan.
