Electric Vehicle Winter Tire Selection Choosing the Best Tires for Cold Weather
Best Tires for Your EV
How Long Will EV Tires Last?
Expect the tires on your EV to last anywhere from 30,000 to 40,000 miles. The added weight of the battery makes tires wear more quickly on an EV. So does the high torque generated every time you press on the accelerator.
Yes, that means youll spend more money on tires with an EV than with a gas-powered car, but take heart. Youll save money on gas and have lower overall maintenance costs that will make it all work out in your favor in the end.
Why Do EVs Need Special Tires?
Electric vehicles have four things that set them apart from most gasoline and diesel vehicles: weight, efficiency balancing, lower noise levels, and power delivery. Electric cars are heavier than traditionally-powered combustion vehicles. Usually by thirty percent or more. This gives them a unique efficiency balance between traction needs and rolling resistance.
Rolling resistance is the friction created by tires rolling across the roadway. All vehicles need some rolling resistance because thats what keeps the car wheels-down and moving safely. But too much, and you sacrifice efficiency.
Just having LRR tires isnt enough, though. Electric vehicles also deliver a lot of power to the road and they do so all at once. Combustion-powered vehicles like a gasoline car ramp up power over time rather than delivering at one time. This immediate power of an EV means its tires need to be more sticky so they can transfer the power being delivered to traction to make the vehicle move.
Most of the tires listed above are high-load (HL) rated tires made specifically for electric vehicles. They often have a higher inflation (psi) rate than a standard car in order to mitigate noise, have a rolling resistance balance for both low-speed stickiness and at-speed cruising for efficiency, and stronger sidewalls and compounds to bear the weight of the EV.

Best Winter Tires for 2022
Do I need winter tires?
This is a very loaded question often hotly debated by professionals of all backgrounds. Though ultimately, the answer is down to your discretion as a driver and what your seasonal winter climate experience is like. Tire technology has come a very long way over the past several decades, enabling many all-season tires to perform surprisingly admirably in snowy and icy conditions. So if you live in a climate where winters are milder and it can snow, but only a few times out of the season, you may be able to get by with a quality set of all-season tires. However, if you live well north of the Mason-Dixon line and regularly see snow every winter, such as around the Great Lakes region, high up in the Rocky Mountains, or further north and up through our northernly neighbor, winter tires are an absolute must and come with our highest recommendation. In some parts of Canada and Europe, because of how severe their winters can get, theyre even required by law.
Are there any downsides to winter tires?
Winter tires are specifically engineered to optimize grip while leveraging other features that affect a vehicles driving performance such as braking, acceleration, handling, noise, ride quality, and fuel economy. While ideally, winter tires exist to get the most grip, they do so, but at some expense. Winter tire compounds, or the materials the tire is generally made of, are softer than your everyday all-season or warm-climate performance tires. More grip means more friction, which consumes more fuel, while the more aggressive tread patterns may return more noticeable road noise. Additionally, the softer compound means that theyre more susceptible to wear and dont last as long as harder all-season or performance tires. And for some, having to swap out winter tires every season is an additional maintenance cost, which can be an issue if money is tight. But if you can swing it, the peace of mind and safety that winter tires provide is priceless.
Are there different types of winter tires?
Yes. Similarly to how there are varying degrees and grades of performance, all-season, all-terrain, etc., there are similar variations with winter tires. There are performance winter tires which, as you guessed by the name, are geared towards performance applications; normal winter tires, which can fit most vehicles; ones geared for light and heavy-duty trucks; all-terrain winter tires for the off-road gurus; and as of late, winter tires geared towards EVs. Figuring out which winter tire is best for your application depends on where you plan to drive during the snowy season and your type of vehicle. There are also studded, studdable, or studdless tires, which we explain below.
How do I determine the need for studded, studdable, or studless tires?
In addition to the grade of tires, there are three different types of winter tires. Studded tires are specifically for the most extreme winter conditions like hard-packed snow and ice; studdable tires are studless tires that can have studs retrofitted; and studless tires, which make up most average winter tires. Its important to look up your local laws as studded tires, or studdable tires with the intent of adding studs, are illegal, to reduce road wear. Its only in more extreme winter climates, such as Canada and through Rocky Mountain passes that studded winter tires are road-legal.
Are the run-flat type of winter tires any good?
Run-flat type winter tires allow driving for up to 50 miles after a puncture. This is made possible due to hardened and reinforced sidewalls that can support a vehicles weight for a very limited distance (so that you can either get home or to a reputable tire shop) when the tire fails to hold air. However, there are several compromises to consider. Those hardened sidewalls often negatively affect ride quality, pronouncing road imperfections and bumps. They also may not grip as well as some non-run-flat tires because of the lack of pliability with the sidewall as tires contour over surfaces. This solid sidewall also reduces flexibility in case of the need to air down tires for more grip. Additionally, they tend to command a bigger premium over standard tires, which are often not worth the extra cost for the compromises they incur. Run-flats however are ideal if your vehicle does not have a spare or tire repair kit.
I was recommended a tire brand, not on this list. Are they still good?
Our list is very limited to five choices, which makes our task of choosing the best winter tires very difficult. Theres no reputable manufacturer that doesnt produce a decent-performing winter tire. However, some do a better job than others in certain aspects and is often reflected in the price. While our list tries to round up the best winter tires, we highly recommend and encourage you to do as much research as possible beyond this list to find the best winter tire for you and your application.
Best Motorcycle Tires For Cold Weather
How Does Winter Affect Motorcycle Tires?
Riding a motorcycle is more difficult than driving a car in the rain or snow. Not only does motorcycling in such conditions necessitate considerable experience, but it also necessitates the use of proper tires. Therefore, it is vital to have the right tires for comfort and safety. These are designed to manage slick roads and snow, making your travels safer than they would be with ordinary tires.
In some countries, having winter motorcycle tires is required regardless of whether or not it snows. Even if the law doesn't dictate the need for winter tires in your country, it is important to own a pair for your bike nonetheless.
People automatically think of studded or spiked tires when we talk about winter tires for the cold weather for motorcycles, but that is not what we are talking about. Of course, some cyclists enjoy riding on icy (and inevitably frozen) roads as a hobby, but this is a rare occurrence.
The most essential question for the majority of people who ride their motorcycles to work or school is whether it is safe to ride on wet, slippery winter roads or not.
As you may be aware, the tires' grip diminishes as the temperature drops. This is especially true for high-grip tires, which have excelled this summer. When the tires aren't warmed up at all right after departure, they start to skid.
Since tires are constructed of rubber, they get rigid and lose their flexibility when it gets cold, and, inevitably, they won't be able to offer the grip they should. Furthermore, the world is not so foolish as to believe that modern vehicles equipped with traction control and anti-lock brakes are safe.
Electronic controls are helpless in the face of simple sliding. Tire idle control during acceleration and deceleration is useless while cornering with no acceleration or deceleration, which is why you're tipping over at a typical, average junction. The ability of the tire to slip or not slip is determined by its performance.
It's time to prepare for winter when the days get shorter and the chilly weather sets in. That's why we've examined some of the best motorcycle tires for cold weather, which are built to withstand even the worst winter conditions.
