Long Range Electric Vehicles EVs for Extended Journeys Over 300 miles

Range life: The 8 EVs EPA-rated for 300 miles or more
This week, Tesla lost its lead position in electric vehicle range, held since the 2012 arrival of the Model S.
The Model S delivered 265 EPA miles back then, passed the 300-mile barrier in 2016, and now achieves 405 miles in Long Range form. But Silicon Valley rival Lucid Motors has rolled into the scene with its Air sedan, rated last week by the EPA at up to 520 miles.
Back in 2010, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard predictedwhen he was EV engineering director at VWs Palo Alto, California, laboratorythat EVs would have a range of 500 miles or more within 10 years. He was off only by a year or so.
Achieving 500 miles on a charge, with a normal car, has been a target for years, and while we think range is a red herring when the focus should be on efficiency and charging, the level of buzz over Lucids ratings over the past week make a strong argument that its a good thing for EV adoption. All indications suggest that Lucid is going to be a technology leader for efficiency, too.
More importantly, were finally at a point in which multiple EVsnot only from Teslaoffer 300 miles or more of range. In surveys for years, American respondents have been saying that 300 miles is a sweet spot that would allow more families to consider EVs.
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5
The BMW i4, BMW iX, Cadillac Lyriq, Ford F-150 Lightning, Genesis GV60, GMC Hummer EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Nissan Ariya are all due to arrive by mid 2022. And all are predicting a range of 300 miles or more in some versions.
Prices include destination charges unless indicated otherwise. And while there may be multiple models in a lineup that top 300 miles, we only list each model once. While some models on the list haven't been delivered quite yet, we've limited the list to models with confirmed ratings at FuelEconomy.gov.
Further, because charge rate is just as important in making these vehicles usable for long trips, weve given some indication of how quickly they can pack a significant amount of range back in.
Heres the 300 club:
2021 Lucid Air Dream Edition

The Model 3 Performance still goes 315 miles on a charge, and while the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus, with its smaller battery capacity, goes only 263 miles, it still has the best efficiency of any other U.S.-market EV, at 142 MPGe, or 24 kwh/100 miles (or about 4.2 mi/kwh).
2021 Tesla Model Y
Tesla Model Y Long RangeEPA range: 326 milesFast-charging: Up to 200 miles in 15 minutesPrice: $55,190
The Model Y is sized and priced affordably enough for a segment of American families, so its no surprise its Teslas top seller. And at 326 miles, the Long Range version offers about as much distance as you might want to go in one stint with the family. The Model Y Performance also earns a 303-mile rating. A revamped, cast-body Model Y to be produced in Texas, potentially including Teslas new 4680-format cells, might arrive late this year or early next and further boost range.
Rivian R1S
Rivian R1SEPA range: 316 milesFast-charging: Up to 140 miles in 20 minutesPrice: $70,000 (plus destination not yet disclosed)
The R1S electric SUV is arriving later this fall, just after the R1T electric pickup, and with its flat-folding seats, its been described by CEO RJ Scaringe as an awesome car-camping setupespecially so with the outdoor-getaway-oriented charging network the company is putting together. 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Ford Mustang Mach-E Extended RangeEPA range: 300 milesFast-charging: 10-80% in about 52 minutesPrice: $53,700 (Mach-E Premium)
In its rear-wheel-drive form, the Mach-E Extended Range returns 300 miles on a charge, according to the EPA. Dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions dont do nearly as well, though, at 270 miles. One issue in road-trip charging is that the Mach-E simply cant fast-charge as quickly as some of these other long-range EVs, so youll need to do just a bit more advance planning. Ford is aiming for more range via both hardware tweaks and over-the-air updates, and it recently hinted that more Mach-E range is on the way starting for 2022.
26 Electric Cars in the U.S. that can do 300 miles of range
In December 2010, when the first-generation Nissan Leaf EV arrived in the U.S., it had a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that delivered an EPA-est. range of just 73 miles. Although the Leaf was a pioneer, the range between charges was impractical and drove away many prospective electric vehicle buyers.
Thankfully, times have changed. We now live in a world where EVs can achieve well over 300 miles of range on a full charge. Here are 26 electric cars with at least 300 miles of maximum range that are already available at U.S. dealerships or will start arriving by the end of 2023. Polestar expects the 2024 2s RWD variant to deliver an EPA-est. range of up to 300 miles and its other two variants to deliver an EPA-est. range of up to 270 miles.
The 2024 Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor has an 85 kWh battery pack and supports charging at up to 205 kW. It has a newly developed permanent magnet motor that produces 299 hp and 361 lb.-ft. of torque. It will likely cost just under USD 50,000.
Rivian R1T

Based on an in-house platform, the Rivian R1T pickup is offered to American buyers in the Adventure trim with a starting MSRP of USD 73,000. There are four configurations on offer: Dual-Motor AWD + Standard Pack (USD 73,000), Dual-Motor AWD + Large Pack (USD 79,000), Dual-Motor AWD + Max Pack (USD 89,000), and Quad-Motor AWD + Large Pack (USD 87,000). More configurations are coming soon, which weve detailed in the main Rivian R1T article.
The most basic configurations Rivian-est. range is just 260+ miles. The Dual-Motor AWD + Large Pack configurations range, EPA-est. or Rivian-est., isnt available yet. As for the Dual-Motor AWD + Max Pack configurations range, Rivian expects it to be 400 miles.
The Quad-Motor AWD + Large Pack configuration, which is the only one currently on sale and uses a 135 kWh battery pack, has an EPA-est. rating of 328 miles. Its safe to assume the Dual-Motor AWD + Large Pack and Dual-Motor AWD + Max Packs EPA-est. range figures will be higher than that.
The Dual-Motor AWD powertrain provides 600+ hp and 600+ lb.-ft of torque. This version of the R1T pickup can go from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Quad-Motor AWD drive system has a combined output of 835 hp and 908 lb.-ft. It reduces the 0-60 mph acceleration time to 3.0 seconds.
Rivian is building a charging network like Tesla Rivian Adventure Network. The company plans to install 3,500+ DC fast chargers with an output of 200 kW initially and 300+ kW in the future at approximately 600 sites in the U.S. and Canada as part of this network. Charging the R1T at one of these chargers for 20 minutes can give it a range of up to 140 miles.
Another Rivian charging network under deployment in the U.S. and Canada is Rivian Waypoints. This network consists of Level 2 (AC) chargers. There will be over 10,000 of those charger when the company completes building it. The 11.5 kW Level 2 (AC) Rivian Wall Charger can add up to 25 miles of range per hour.
Rivian R1S

Like its pickup truck sibling, the Rivian R1S is based on Rivians bespoke all-electric architecture and offered in the Adventure trim. Currently, customers can choose from three configurations: Dual-Motor AWD + Standard Pack (USD 78,000), Dual-Motor AWD + Large Pack (USD 84,000), and Quad-Motor AWD + Large Pack (USD 92,000). More configurations are coming soon, and weve detailed them in the main Rivian R1S story.
Rivian expects the most basic range to deliver a range of just 260 miles. The mid-level configurations range, EPA-est. or Rivian-est., isnt out yet. The top-end configuration, which has a 135 kWh battery pack and is the only one Rivian is selling at the moment, delivers an EPA-est. range of 321 miles. So, the mid-level configurations EPA-est. range will likely be higher than that. The charging times are the same as those of the R1T.
The Rivian R1S Quad-Motor AWD powertrain generates 835 hp and 908 lb.-ft. of torque. As per Rivians website, it allows the electric SUV to go from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. The Dual-Motor AWD powertrain produces 600+ hp and 600+ lb.-ft. of torque and allows a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.5 seconds.
Tesla Cybertruck

The Tesla Cybertruck will be manufactured at the brands Giga Texas plant in Austin (Texas), U.S., with production scheduled to commence in mid-2023. Deliveries should begin the same day as production.
The steel-reinforced truck was originally priced between USD 39,900 and USD 69,900. However, production costs of vehicles, especially high-tech electric models, have significantly grown since 2019, so Tesla could launch it at much higher prices. The company has taken down the original prices from its website anticipating that change. It is still offering prospective buyers a fully-refundable pre-order offer for USD 100, though.
Tesla stated back in 2019 that the Cybertruck can cover over 300 miles of range with a dual-motor setup, with over 500 miles possible with a single-motor setup. While the company hasnt released any performance figures for the Cybertruck, its likely to be quicker to 60 mph than its closest competitors.
Tesla Model 3 Performance

The Tesla Model 3 Performance is priced at USD 53,990 in the U.S. market. With an EPA-rated range of 315 miles, the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system of this compact all-electric sedan enables it to go from 0-60 mph in just 3.1 seconds* and attain a top speed of 162 mph. Connected to a Tesla Supercharger, the Model 3s battery can be charged up to 175 miles in 15 minutes.

The Tesla Model S is available in 670 hp Dual Motor AWD and 1,020 hp Plaid Tri Motor AWD variants. It costs USD 94,990 in the range-focused variant and USD 114,990 in the performance-focused variant.
The Tesla Model S Dual Motor AWD has a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph, and yet, it delivers an EPA-est. range of up to 405 miles.
The Tesla Model S Plaid Tri Motor AWD gets crazier on the performance front, hitting 0-60 mph in just 1.99 seconds* and achieving a top speed of 200 mph. Still, it doesnt compromise on the EPA-est. range much, as it can travel up to 396 miles on a full charge.

Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X, the brands first SUV, is available in Dual Motor AWD and Plaid Tri-Motor AWD variants. The sedan equivalent of the Model S costs USD 109,990 and USD 119,990, respectively, in these variants.
With an EPA-rated range of 348 miles and 333 miles, both variants of the Tesla Model X are pretty practical. Speaking of practicality, the Dual Motor AWD variant is optionally available as a six-seater and even as a seven-seater, while the Plaid Tri-Motor AWD variant packs six seats as standard.
The base variant of the Model X has a top speed of 149 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The top-end variant can hit 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, but it cant go any faster.
Tesla Model Y

The Model Y is the Model 3 on stilts. Its available in Long Range Dual Motor AWD and Performance Dual Motor AWD variants, for USD 52,990 and USD 56,990, respectively. Both variants have an EPA-est. range of over 300 miles. The base variant can deliver 330 miles on a full charge, while the top-end variant runs out of juice at 303 miles.
Customers wanting more punch can select the Model Y Performance, which can hit a top speed of 155 mph. The 2023 Model Y Performance has a maximum range of 303 miles, while the Long Range Model Y has a maximum range of 330 miles on a full charge. The Performance variant of the 2023 Model Y has a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, says Tesla.
