What is the most reliable electric car
Best Electric Cars
But we dont recommend every EV weve tested. Just like vehicles with an internal combustion engine, EVs have varied results in Consumer Reports tests and owner surveys. Many of them have performed well in our road tests while others faltered. Some have proved to be reliable, as reported to us by vehicle owners in our Annual Auto Surveys. And while many come with a full complement of advanced driver assistance and safety features as standard equipment, these features are optional on a few electric carsand some automakers dont even offer the full complement.
Below, we present the best electric cars weve tested, ranked in order of their Overall Score, factoring in road-test performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safetystarting with the highest-rated EV. Be aware that Overall Scores change over time as new information becomes available, such as reliability data we collect through our exclusive surveys. The cars model pages always reflect our latest ratings.

Tesla and Nissan Make the Most Reliable Electric Vehicles
This is due in part to the fact that the latest wave of electric vehicles ride on all-new platforms, rather than benefiting from carrying over major components from existing production cars, as is the norm. They tend to showcase innovations, such as the latest controls, infotainment systems, and even electric-powered glove boxes and door handles. All these new features can often mean new problems.
Many of the latest EVs are from companies that have been producing gasoline engines for over 100 years and are facing a learning curve when it comes to producing EVs, as evidenced in our latest reliability survey findings. But Tesla and Nissan have been mass producing electric cars for over a decade now, which gives them a clear advantage over many competitors. While others are dealing with the growing pains of change, long-running models like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model 3 have very few problems with batteries, electric motors, or charging.
The relatively strong reliability of the Model 3 is unique among Teslas lineup: Its other models remain below average. Closely related to the Model 3, the newer Model Y has improved in recent years but still shows some suspension issues and body hardware problems associated with closing the hatch, and paint and trim. Owners have reported problems with the air suspension on the higher-end Tesla models.
As manufacturers continue to develop and refine EVs and the technology becomes more common, EV reliability will continue to improve. But for now, the Tesla Model 3 and Nissan Leaf are reliable choices. The Model 3 also enjoys Teslas charging infrastructure, the nations best, and makes a compelling argument for becoming an early adopter.

Choosing a brand-new electric vehicle (EV) in 2023 is no easy task because there are just so many things to consider. Not only do you have to take into consideration the upfront cost, but also other things such as running costs, looks, range, practicality, and of course, reliability.
Thankfully, electric cars are some of the most reliable vehicles on our roads today because they don't have an engine, which means fewer moving parts that could potentially go wrong as they do in an internal combustion engine (ICE) car.
With millions of EVs being sold every year across the world, with hundreds of different models, it can get quite confusing when deciding upon the best next step for you. But if you stick to your gut, go for something that will suit you down to the ground, and choose one of the best on the market, then what's the worst that could possibly happen?
Here are 10 of the best electric cars you can buy in 2023.
10 Kia EV6
No matter whether it's electric or not, when it comes to the reliability of Kia cars, you are most likely safe. This is thanks to the brand's tried and tested parts and history of bullet-proof engines and models.
Like every other Kia, the 2023 EV6 comes with a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty that covers most components, including its battery. But it should be noted that the battery itself is covered for a total of eight years giving you and/or the next owner added peace of mind. Speaking of which, power comes from a 77.51 kWh battery that offers 230 miles of range and 577 hp of electrifying performance.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a more reliable car brand to opt for, but the nine below will give this a run for its money.
9 Nissan Leaf
Due to its small proportions and great value for money, it's no surprise to find the Leaf has been one of the best-selling EVs in recent years. When it first came out in 2010, it was slightly misunderstood as 'just another Hollywood celeb car' like the Prius was famed for being, but it was far more than that as it proved over the years.
What makes the extensive Leaf so unique is that it's great both in and out of cities making it the perfect commuter car. Plus, it comes with an impressive 150 miles of range in its standard form, which grows to 226 miles with the upgraded battery pack. Additionally, the Leaf comes with a three-year/60,000-mile warranty, which will suit most owners down to the ground.
8 Toyota Prius Prime
Okay, so we may be cheating slightly here because the Toyota Prius Prime is actually a plug-in hybrid, and not solely an electric vehicle, but it made it onto this list because of how reliable it is and proof that you should really consider checking one out for your next car. We'd seriously consider owning a Prius, too.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that is mated to two electric motors one that helps power the wheels, and one to aid the automatic transmission. However, you can also opt for a tri-motor variant that extends the Prius to offer all-wheel drive with the extra motor powering the rear axle.
With this electric motor set-up, you can expect to see around 40 miles of electric-only range, which is perfect for city centers and most smaller commutes to work during the week. And not to worry if you run out of juice because you have that reliable gasoline engine that always has your back.
7 Kia Niro EV
After winning countless awards for its excellence, the Kia Niro EV remains one of the best electric cars money can buy. It may come with a slight premium over some of its rivals, but it's always worth paying that little extra for quality, right? While it may appear like an SUV, the Kia Niro is technically a hatchback, thanks to the way its boot is structured. But this means it isn't as big as it looks in the photos, and it still has a vast boot.
Its standard 64 kWh battery produces 201 hp and allows it to travel around 253 miles on a single charge placing it slap bang in the average of electric car ranges which is very good these days, we should add. It obviously comes with all the bells and whistles you'd expect to find in a family hatchback, so you won't feel like you're missing anything and with a starting price of $39,450, you won't feel like you've been cheated.
6 Tesla Model 3
If both performance and reliability are what you're after, then you probably don't need to look much further than the Tesla Model 3. This is a car that has grown from strength to strength since it came out in 2017 and is now one of the best-selling cars in the world.
But when it comes to reliability, the Tesla remains one of the best. Every Model 3 comes with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, and the battery and drive unit is covered separately for eight years/100,000 miles for RWD models. Long Range and more expensive Model 3 Performance models are covered for the same eight years, but the mileage is extended to 120,000 miles. Tesla does this to ensure the cover of all the electrical bits against faults and guarantees a minimum 70% retention of battery capacity.
5 Hyundai Ioniq Electric
Like all other Hyundai models, your money is safe with the Ioniq Electric, thanks to its long-standing levels of reliability and superb build quality. Sitting just below the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the plucky Ioniq is an old model, but one that is still a viable contender for your next electric car.
The Ioniq Electric has an official range of around 200 miles on a single charge making it perfect for most people's daily lives. It also benefits from fast chargers, which means you won't be hanging around as much as some other EVs. It may not look the prettiest, but there's no reason why you shouldn't at least test-drive one.
4 Chevrolet Bolt
If you're looking for a daily runaround, then very few are as appealing as the Chevrolet Bolt. This cheap electric car offers a low price point for a big range. You can expect up to 259 miles of range from its 65 kWh battery, which is rated at 200 hp.
Despite its tiny size, the Bolt is surprisingly spacious and comes with all the optional extras you'd expect to find in any modern car.
Chevrolet is great when it comes to reliability and safety too, so there is absolutely no need to worry about this city car, despite its size.
3 Ford Mustang Mach-E
Sure, the Tesla Model 3 is a quick car, but if you want more space, a trusted marque, and looks that could kill, then the Ford Mustang Mach-E might just be the option to go for. Don't be fooled, however, as this is far from a Mustang as the traditionalists know it. In fact, it couldn't be further from that, but in a good way.
Originally, Ford set out to make an all-electric Focus but ended up changing their minds mid-way and going with an electrified Mustang the far more exciting route. But as you'd expect, this electric crossover SUV is very reliable because it shares so many of its parts with other Ford models, and the batteries are really solid.
2 Ford F-150 Lightning
If you were impressed by the Mach-E, then you might want to prepare yourself for this one. The F-150 Lightning is Ford's flagship electric pickup truck that has drastically grown in popularity and is now one of the favorites in America. Not only is it affordable (relatively speaking) but it's also incredibly practical and silent unlike most other pickups.
In its most impressive trim, the electric F-150 offers up to 320 miles on a single charge, thanks to its larger 131.0-kWh pack. But if you don't need the extra range or want something a little cheaper, the smaller 98.0-kWh battery variant is excellent and Ford claims it returns a driving range of 230 miles.
1 Hyundai Ioniq 5
Last but not least is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 which has been all over the motoring press in recent months and years thanks to its cool, retro looks and great all-around package. Hyundai doesn't mess about when it comes to building a great car, and the Ioniq 5 is no exception.
It offers excellent reliability because it shares so many of its parts with other Hyundai/Kia models, and the brand knows a thing or two about building a seriously solid piece of kit. With all Ioniq 5 models, you get a five-year unlimited mileage warranty on most parts and an eight-year/100,000 miles warranty on the battery meaning you and the next owner won't need to fret about any reliability issues with this EV.

When buying a new car, you first want to know if it is reliable. Real human experience can give you valuable insight into what to expect. Like every other year, Consumer Reports has issued a list of the most reliable electric cars, and, the list has changed a lot compared to the previous year. In a way, though, that is to be expected because as EVs age, consumers will have a little more experience with their vehicles. If any problems come to the surface, that is when it will show up. As the old saying goes, "Time will tell," and in this case, it most certainly will.
In theory, electric vehicles should be much more reliable because they are missing many problematic parts associated with ICE-powered vehicles, like the transmission, ignition, fuel systems, valvetrains, and exhaust system, among many other things. In reality, however, EVs have just as many, if not more, problems than gasoline-powered or hybrid models. Owners of electric cars have reported issues with the battery packs, charging, electric drive motors, and heating and cooling systems. Here's a list of 15 electric vehicles ranked by Consumer Reports according to the issues reported by owners.
